REVIEW: CONTEMPO MUSIC COLLECTIVE SHOWCASES TWO WORLD PREMIERES AT LOGAN CENTER

Even for Contempo, whose defining mission is championing top-level contemporary music, a concert Sunday afternoon in the Performance Hall at the Logan Center for the Arts was a heady blast of the new.

The music collective at the University of Chicago presented not one, but two world premieres by a pair of longtime composers with renowned, international careers who were both present for the event – Sofia Gubaidulina, 83, and Gunther Schuller, 89.

It was another major milestone for Contempo, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a special series of concerts. Originally known as the Contemporary Chamber Players, the group was established by Ralph Shapey, a widely recognized member of the University of Chicago’s composition faculty.
