Noted Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout proclaimed the ensemble to be “the group that to my mind has now succeeded the Beaux Arts Trio as the outstanding chamber music ensemble of its kind,” and The New Yorker described it as “probably the finest American piano trio currently on the field.”
Founded in 2001, Trio Solisti - featuring current members violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Guy Johnston, and pianist Fabio Bidini - performs at major venues and series across the United States. The Trio has twice performed a three-concert series at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall: in 2015, the trio performed the complete piano chamber music of Brahms in performances hailed by The Strad for their "abundant dynamism, exceptional balance and a wholly successful grasp of the interpretive essence,” and in the 2018-19 season, the trio returned to Weill Hall for a series called “Masterworks”, featuring music of Dvořák, Schubert, Chausson, Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms.
Highlights of the 2019-20 season include performances for The Gilmore Keyboard Festival, Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Vancouver Friends of Chamber Music, Edmonton and Buffalo Chamber Music Societies, many return engagements around the country, as well as exciting collaborations with guest artists and composers.
Commissioned by the Clarice Performing Arts Center Artist Partner Program at The University of Maryland, Trio Solisti premieres a piece by young composer Milad Yousufi, an Afghan refugee currently studying at the Mannes School of Music. The mini-residency includes a lecture/demo, masterclass, and pre-concert discussion, and culminates in a concert that includes the premiere performance of Yousufi’s new piece.
The Trio enjoys collaborations during the season for the Detroit Chamber Music Society with violist Hsin-Yun Huang and bassist Stephen Molina in Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet, and at the Troy Chromatics Series in Troy, NY, and at Harvard Musical Association in Boston, MA, with Hsin-Yun Huang, performing piano quartets of Saint-Saëns and Brahms.
Anticipating its 20th anniversary season in 2020-2021, Trio Solisti is developing a number of projects, including all-Beethoven Trios programs celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
In previous seasons, the trio has appeared at Great Performers and Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, Washington Performing Arts at Kennedy Center, Chamber Music Society of Detroit, Friends of Chamber Music Kansas City, and La Jolla Music Society’s Revelle Series. Trio Solisti’s collaborations with preeminent composers of our time have produced such works as Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon’s Piano Trio No. 2 (2017), Paul Moravec’s Tempest Fantasy, which won the Pulitzer in 2004, Lowell Liebermann’s Trio No. 3 (2012), and Pulitzer Prize-winner Kevin Puts’ Living Frescoes (2012).
The Trio’s recordings include Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff Trios, Ravel & Chausson Trios, Dvořák Trios, Café Music, Tempest Fantasy, and the ensemble’s own arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Trio Solisti is the founding ensemble of Telluride Musicfest, an annual summer chamber music festival in Telluride, Colorado, celebrating its 15th season in the summer of 2020. The Trio proudly marks its 15th year as ensemble-in-residence at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
