Krystian Chiu

Cellist Krystian Chiu recently gave his solo debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as one of four finalists of the Getting to Carnegie Competition. He has been awarded fellowships to the New York String Orchestra Seminar as well as the Aspen, Heifetz, Bowdoin, Tanglewood, and Sarasota festivals. An avid chamber musician, he was a member of the award winning Atara String Quartet who received the gold medal from the Saint Paul String Quartet Competition as well as prizes from the Fischoff, Discover, A.N. & Pearl G. Barnett, and the Society for

American Musicians competitions. Krystian has been featured on Chicago’s Introductions WFMT 98.7, NPR’s From The Top, New York City’s WQXR 105.9, and Aspen Public Radio. In Aspen, he was chosen for the highly selective Finckel-Wu Han Chamber Music Studio and Weilerstein Chamber Music Workshop and gave the world premier for a piece composed by AMFS President and CEO Alan Fletcher. He has studied chamber music with Cho-Liang Lin, Clive Greensmith, Timothy Eddy, David Finckel and Wu Han, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, Kathleen Winkler, Anton Nel, Cathy Cho, Nancy Allen, Alex Kerr, Masao Kawasaki, and the Pacifica, Emerson and Ying Quartets. Krystian has shared the stage with Sharon Isbin, James Dunham, the Pacifica Quartet, and members of the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Minnesota Orchestras. He has appeared in master classes with Clive Greensmith, Timothy Eddy, Brinton Smith, Paul Colleti, the Montrose Trio, and the Dover and Escher Quartets.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Krystian Chiu began his cello studies at the age of four. He then joined The Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, a nationally recognized training center for gifted precollege musicians. He went on to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees in cello performance from Indiana University and Rice University, respectively. His primary teachers include Hans Jørgen Jensen, Eric Kim, Desmond Hoebig, Christopher French, and Richard Aaron.
