CELLIST JOHANNES MOSER PERFORMS BEETHOVEN'S FINAL CELLO SONATAS AT MANDEL HALL, NOVEMBER 21
CHICAGO - Award-winning cellist Johannes Moser will perform at the University of Chicago's Mandel Hall, along with pianist Paul Rivinius, on Friday, November 21, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. Selections on this concert, part of the University of Chicago Presents' Classic Concert Series, will include Beethoven's two final cello sonatas, as well as works by Britten and Takemitsu.
Written at the height of his career, Beethoven's Opus 102 cello sonatas were in fact the last sonatas he wrote for any solo instrument other than piano, and marked a dramatic departure from his "Heroic Style" of the early 1800s. These final two sonatas provide the opening and closing of this performance.
The concert also includes Britten's Cello Sonata in C major, which the composer wrote specifically for his friend, the great Mstislav Rostropovich. Opening the evening's second half, Takemitsu's Orion originally functioned as the first movement of Orion and Pleaides, a work for cello and orchestra, before being rearranged into the recital piece heard here.
Hailing from Munich, Johannes Moser, 29, began studying cello at the age of 8 and went on to win the 2000 Davidoff Competition in Riga and the 2001 Mendelssohn competition in Berlin. His prominence as a solo performer, however, began in 2002, after winning the top cello prize in the 12th Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the world's most prestigious music competitions.
Pianist Paul Rivinius, a frequent collaborator with Moser, is currently the pianist for the renowned Clemente Trio, with whom he has performed since 1986. Also from Munich, Rivinius has appeared on three of Moser's recordings, including two ECHO Klassic award-winning discs.
TICKETS for this concert are $32 for general public or $5 for students with a valid ID and can be purchased by calling the University of Chicago Presents Concert Office at (773) 702-8068, or visiting 5720 S. Woodlawn Avenue on the University of Chicago campus.
