CHICAGO - The University of Chicago Presents (UCP) will continue its tradition of highlighting excellence in the performing arts, as it welcomes 11 current and past Grammy Award winners and nominees to the stage in 2009. Artist-in-residence, the Pacifica Quartet--named Musical America's 2009 Ensemble of the Year and nominated for a 2009 Grammy in Best Chamber Music Performance--will kick off UCP's winter programming at Mandel Hall on Jan. 11 in a performance featuring Elliot Carter's String Quartet No. 5. Fellow nominees and classical music superstars Takács Quartet with pianist Marc-André Hamelin will team up for a Feb. 20 performance.

Pacifica's January 2008 recording of Carter's Quartets Nos. 1 and 5, called "a stunning disc" by The New York Times, was nominated for a Grammy Award in Best Chamber Music Performance, as announced by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences last week. The Takács Quartet, a previous winner in 2002, shares a nomination in the same category for its recording of Brahms' Opus 51 quartet. With three Grammy nominations already to his name, Hamelin is currently up for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance for his release In a State of Jazz. The 51st annual awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

Also appearing in 2009, jazz bassist and three-time Grammy-winner Dave Holland will bring his quintet featuring Robin Eubanks, Chris Potter, Steve Nelson and Nate Smith for a special Jazz at Mandel Hall concert on Jan. 25. American vocal ensemble Pomerium, a 1999 nominee, will appear in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on Feb. 6, performing works from the Sistine Chapel at the time of Michelangelo,

Currently in its second three-year residency at the University of Chicago, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, winner of the 1980 award in Best Chamber Music Performance, will return to Mandel Hall on Mar. 6 with works by Schoenberg, Mozart and Mahler. Conducted by Cliff Colnot, the program will also include world premiere works by University of Chicago student composers Jacob Bancks and Alex Berezowsky, who shared top prize in the first-ever SPCO/UC composition competition last month in St. Paul. (Incidentally, SPCO concertmaster Steven Copes' recording of George Tsontakis' Violin Concerto No. 2 is also currently nominated for a Best New Classical Composition award.)

Ensemble-in-residence eighth blackbird, a 2008 Grammy winner for its strange imaginary animals album, will appear at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Apr. 4 in a Contempo Double-Bill along with Brazilian jazz queen and Latin Grammy winner Leny Andrade and her trio.

Quatuor Mosaïques, a 2001 Grammy winner, will bring its unique sound of period instruments to Mandel Hall with works by Haydn, Mozart and Schubert on Apr. 17, followed by a weekend of concerts, on Apr. 24 and 25, with bassist and three-time Grammy winner Edgar Meyer. Meyer's concerts will feature his own compositions performed with piano one night and the University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Barbara Schubert on the next.
