2007–08
SAINT PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Three concerts

In the third year of its residency at The University of Chicago, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra continues its mission to become the world’s own chamber orchestra. With that in mind, the SPCO completed a critically praised tour of Eastern Europe at the beginning of 2007. Now, with the addition of two new Artistic Partners, inclduing soprano Dawn Upshaw, the SPCO’s 2007–08 season promises more adventure and enjoyment. Extending musical hands across the prairie, the Twin Cities and the Windy City team up for another season of great orchestral music on an intimate scale.

Sunday / 14 Oct 2007 / 3 p.m.

Scott Yoo, conductor

Dan Coleman: Long ago, this radiant day
R. Strauss: Metamorphosen (for 23 solo strings)
Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, op. 60

The SPCO opens its Chicago season with works for string ensembles by Strauss and living composer Dan Coleman. Inspired by a poem by Anna Ahkmatova, the Coleman work was commissioned by conductor Scott Yoo’s Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra. In the second half, Maestro Yoo and the SPCO will shine new light on Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony. Yoo is an award-winning violinist and Harvard graduate in physics.

Saturday / 26 Jan 2008 / 10:30 a.m.

Sunday / 27 Jan 2008 / 3 p.m.

Jon Kimura Parker, piano

Mozart: Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat major, K. 452
Bartók: Divertimento for Strings, BB 118
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467

Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker's career has taken him from Carnegie Hall to the Arctic Circle, where he performed in some of the most remote locations on Earth as a member of the Piano Plus outreach project. In the more comfortable confines of Mandel Hall, he will perform one of Mozart's most beloved concertos and his piano quintet with the superb winds of the SPCO.

Sunday / 27 Apr 2008 / 3 p.m.

Douglas Boyd, conductor
Dawn Upshaw, soprano

Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite
Stravinsky: Two Poems of Konstantin Bal'mont
Stravinsky: Three Japanese Lyrics
Schubert: She Was Here (newly commissioned and arranged by Osvaldo Golijov)
Haydn: Symphony No. 104 in D major, Hob. I:104, "London"

Dynamic young Scottish oboist and conductor Douglas Boyd returns to the podium at Mandel Hall for a second appearance. Once again, he and the SPCO will offer something old and something new. Soprano par excellence Dawn Upshaw will sing Schubert lieder in their original form and then as arranged by living composer Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. The Pulcinella Suite, inspired by Pergolesi, ushered in Stravinsky's neo-classic period and remains among the composer's most popular works. Fittingly, the program will end with Haydn's "London Symphony," the last of his symphonies and a crowning achievement.
